Richard Brown

Musical Director

Theatre includes: many years as London music director for the RSC at the Barbican. He has been musical director for over 200 productions including Cyrano de Bergerac with Derek Jacobi, Mother Courage with Judi Dench, The Plantagenets with Ralph Fiennes, The Wizard of Oz with Imelda Staunton, Hamlet with Kenneth Branagh and Antony and Cleopatra with Alan Bates. In addition to most of Shakespeare's plays, he has been music director for many other RSC productions including Peter Pan, The Three Sisters, Les Enfants du Paradis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Alice in Wonderland. He has composed and arranged many RSC scores including: The Happiest Days of Your Life, The Three Sisters, Barbarians, The Churchill Play, Playing with Trains, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Divine Gossip, Amphibians, Son of Man, The Hostage and Uncle Vanya.

Recent theatre includes: All's Well That Ends Well with Judi Dench (Gielgud) and Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, King Lear and Macbeth (Albery). He has been musical director for the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat, Australia, where productions included Kiss Me, Kate, Company, Merrily We Roll Along, Godspell and The Witches of Eastwick. Richard was associate music supervisor of the Toronto production of The Lord of the Rings.

Other theatre includes: The Boy Friend, Oliver!, Piaf, Godspell, Ruthie Henshall in Concert, Old Wicked Songs (with Bob Hoskins) and The World's Wife for Melbourne Theatre Company.

Television includes: music for Bergerac, The Wall Game, Educating Britain, Fingermouse, Playdays, King and Castle, Thinkabout Science, Songcatcher and A Walk Through Time.

Compositions include: Widecombe, Zambezi Tales and Dreamtime Tales which are 'concert-musicals' for narrators, children's choirs and orchestra, the ballet-suite for chamber orchestra Tamino's Quest, Four Interludes for cello and piano, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis for choir and organ, and the anthem I May Speak in Tongues of Men, commissioned by Winchester Catherdral.

Musicals include: Once Bitten, Scheherazade and The Fling.
