Theatre includes: Malcolm started as an acting ASM at the Manchester Library Theatre, and worked as a character actor in repertory (Liverpool, Coventry, Colchester and Nottingham) including, at Nottingham Playhouse, Zeal of the Land, Busy in Bartholomew Fair. For Charles Marowitz's Open Theatre, London, he played the Ghost in Hamlet, the Duke in An Othello, Hoss in The Tooth of Crime and the Drum Major in Woyzeck, also Alpha Alpha, The Old Man's Comfort, Bang and How Beautiful with Badges. He was in Knuckle (Oxford Playhouse and Whitehall), followed by the RSC, becoming an associate artist in 1994 and performing in seasons in Stratford and London from 1978 to 2005. RSC includes: Jacques/Marcel/Theo in Piaf, John Dory in Wild Oats, Kent in the Michael Gambon King Lear, One Eye in Molière, Macduff in Macbeth, Lacenaire in Caryl Churchill's Softcops, Williams in Henry V, Buckingham in Richard III, Stoman in The Party, the damaged giant Manik in Singer, Aufidius in Coriolanus, Bajazeth in Tamburlaine the Great, De Flores in The Changeling, the title role in Volpone, Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra, Prospero in The Tempest, and Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
